Here’s how to apply for a driver’s license in Texas:
Gather required documents: You will need to bring documents that prove your identity, Social Security number, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, and Texas residency. Examples include a birth certificate or passport for identity, a Social Security card or W-2 form for SSN, and utility bills or lease agreements for proof of residency.
Complete the application form: You can obtain the Texas driver’s license application form at any Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office or download it from the DPS website. Fill out the form completely and accurately.
Schedule an appointment: You can schedule an appointment online or by phone at your nearest Texas DPS driver’s license office. It’s recommended that you make an appointment in advance to avoid waiting in long lines.
Pay the fee: A Texas driver’s license fee is $25 or $11 for individuals over 85 years old, but it may vary depending on your age and circumstances. You can pay with cash, check, money order, or credit card.
Take the knowledge test: At the DPS office, you will need to take a written knowledge test that covers traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. You can prepare for the test by studying the Texas Driver Handbook and taking practice tests online.
Take the driving test: After passing the knowledge test, you will need to take a driving skills test that evaluates your ability to control the vehicle and follow traffic rules. You can bring your own vehicle or use a DPS vehicle for the test.
Receive your Texas driver’s license: After completing the application process and passing the tests, you will receive a temporary paper license that you can use until your permanent card arrives by mail within two weeks.
